As an unincorporated area, Bluemont thrives on its volunteer-driven tradition. Numerous local organizations exist, many of which maintain a connection with the BCA in one form or another.

In 2014, the BCA supported the creation of a free celebration for Bluemont residents—the Bluemont Spring Fling—now an annual event.

The Friends of Bluemont, the local historical association, has received substantial backing from the BCA for its restoration project of the Snickersville Academy (1825), Bluemont’s first school and church.

The recently formed BCA Bluemont Heritage Committee is working to enhance Bluemont’s historical appeal, especially in anticipation of the E.E. Lake Store becoming a Loudoun County Welcome Center.

In collaboration with Loudoun County, the BCA has secured several grants, primarily public funding, to preserve the historic E.E. Lake Store. The county owns the property, while the BCA’s Lake Store Committee manages its operations.

The BCA has also taken formal stances on issues affecting the community. For instance, it petitioned the Loudoun Zoning Board to waive a requirement that would have forced the Village Montessori School to install an asphalt walkway along the front of its property, which would have damaged mature trees and old stone walls. More recently, the BCA lobbied the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors to fund speed-readout cameras for the village.

John Constant, Chairman of the Snickersville Turnpike Association (STA), is a regular at BCA meetings, serving as a watchdog and advocate for Bluemont’s road maintenance with the Virginia Department of Transportation (V-DOT). The BCA has also helped fund historical markers along the historic turnpike from Aldie to Bluemont, spearheaded by the STA.

The BCA also organizes local road trash cleanups under the Keep Loudoun Beautiful (KLB) program every April and October. These volunteer efforts have earned the BCA an “Adopt-a-Highway” certificate.

In spring, the BCA purchases bedding plants for the village’s flower barrels, which are placed and watered during dry spells by volunteers. The barrels are refreshed with vibrant fall chrysanthemums just in time for the Bluemont Fair.

The BCA sponsors local community forums with members of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, as well as planning and zoning staff, to keep the community informed.

The BCA is deeply involved in charitable work, supporting neighbors in need with Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, providing gifts for children in local families facing challenges, donating to food banks, supporting the Volunteer Fire Department, contributing to “Christmas in April,” donating two chairs at the Franklin Park Arts Center, and funding alcohol-free After Prom and After Graduation celebrations for high school seniors. The BCA also responds to special requests for assistance, such as for daycare children at the Community Center.

Additionally, the BCA awards scholarships to local graduating seniors—more than $15,000 over the past three decades. To qualify, seniors must reside within the 20135 zip code or have a 540-554-xxxx telephone number and demonstrate an interest and pride in their hometown, such as by volunteering at the Spring Fling, Bluemont Fair, or local litter cleanups.

To stay connected with the Bluemont community, propose a civic project, seek support for your own initiatives, make announcements, work on local affairs, or simply meet your neighbors, attend one of the monthly BCA meetings.
