Bluemont Designated An Official Appalachian Trail Community
In March 2023, after months of planning and filing applications, Bluemont received the exciting news that it had been accepted as an Appalachian Trail Community. It seemed only fitting for a community that is home to the renowned Bears Den and a section of the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) to align more closely with its neighbors. Bears Den is one of the A.T.’s premier hiking destinations, offering a welcoming hostel with full services, private lodging, and campsites. Its rocky overlook, offering breathtaking views to the west, is considered one of the best in the area—and it’s just minutes from Bluemont’s village center.
This designation brings Bluemont into a collaborative regional partnership, joining Round Hill and Hillsboro as A.T. Communities. Together, we will leverage our collective strengths to extend A.T. education, recreation, and conservation efforts throughout western Loudoun. Bluemont will also co-host the Appalachian Trail Festival this summer on June 10th at the Old Stone School in Hillsboro.
Benefits:
- National recognition through the A.T. Community network and communication channels
- Increased community viability and economic health
- Enhanced visibility through signage, media, and the ATC’s website and publications
- Promoted environmental stewardship within the community
- Strengthened partnerships with public land agencies and volunteers
- A greater sense of place and cultural sustainability
On Sunday, June 4th, 2023 at Bears Den, we will celebrate our formal certification with a special ceremony, where we will receive our official certificate from the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. The event, which will take place rain or shine between 12:30 and 2:30 PM, will feature music, lunch, and fun activities for the whole family. Please RSVP to bluemontatc[@]aol.com if you wish to attend. We also welcome anyone interested in joining our Bluemont A.T. Committee—no hiking experience required!
