BLUEMONT DESIGNATED AN APPALACHIAN TRAIL COMMUNITY!

In March of this year, after months of planning and filing applications to be recognized as an Appalachian Trail Community, Bluemont received word that it was accepted. It seemed only natural that a community that boasts the presence of Bears Den and a section of the A.T. should more closely align with its neighbor. Bears Den is considered one of the A.T.’s premier hiking destinations, offering hikers a drop-in hostel with full services, as well as private lodging and campsites. The rocky overlook with views to the west is the best in our area. And it’s minutes away from our village center.

Our selection now creates a tripartite regional body, closely linked geographically, by joining Bluemont with Round Hill and Hillsboro as A.T. Communities. Our collective strength, will extend our reach throughout western Loudoun with A.T. education, recreation, and conservation efforts. Bluemont will co-host this summer’s Appalachian Trail Festival on June 10th at the Old Stone School in Hillsboro.

BENEFITS: National designation network and communication. Increased community viability and economic health. Recognition and visibility through signage, media, the ATC’s website and publications. Increased community environmental stewardship. Enhanced partnerships with public land agencies and volunteers. Increased sense of place and cultural sustainability.

On Sunday, June 4th at Bears Den there will be a ceremony in which we receive our formal certificate from representatives of the A.T. Conservancy. The event will be held, rain or shine, at Bears Den between 12:30 – 2:30 PM. In addition to the ceremony, there will be music, lunch, and many activities that the entire family will enjoy! Please RSVP to bluemontatc@aol.com if you wish to attend.

We welcome anyone who has interest in joining our Bluemont A.T. Committee – hiking not required! Register your interest at bluemontatc@aol.com.
